In addition to dalgona coffee and garlic bread, another food trend is now making a comeback: croffles. Yes, until now many people are curious about this one snack menu.
What are the nutritional contents of croffles? Is there a safe way to consume them to avoid health risks?
What is croffle?
As reported by the Bakemag page, croffle comes from a combination of two menus, namely croissant and waffle.
However, this does not mean that croissant and waffle dough are combined or cooked together. The way to make your own croffles is to put the croissant dough in the waffle cooker.
This croffle snack can be served with coffee or warm milk for breakfast. This snack turns the soft, buttery croissant dough into a crispy treat.
The texture of the croffle itself is actually denser than a croissant, but not as dry as a typical croissant.
The birth of the croffle menu
It’s common knowledge that croissants or waffles are both popular for Western breakfasts.
Croissants generally have a crescent shape, while waffles have many shapes depending on the mold. You can find a combination of crunchy and soft flavors in croffles.
Launching The Taste page, chef Louise Lennox originally had the idea to combine the two types of snacks into a delicious dessert. Then, he got an offer to develop his food creation idea.
Then in 2017, the croffle menu was finally sold for the first time in a cafe in the center of Dublin. Croffles are made from croissant dough which is then cooked by baking in a waffle mold.
Croffles can be served as a sweet or savory dessert, depending on the toppings .
What are the nutrients?
As explained earlier, croffles are actually made using croissant dough. The following nutritional information is provided by the USDA for one large croissant (67 grams):
- Calories: 272
- Fat: 14 grams
- Sodium: 313 mg
- Carbohydrates: 31 grams
- Fiber: 1.7 grams
- Sugar: 7.5 grams
- Protein: 5.5 grams
According to the Very Well Fit website, the calories in a croissant will depend on its size. The data listed below is for a medium or standard size croissant:
- Mini croissant: 114 calories, 2 grams of protein, 13 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, 6 grams of fat, 3 grams of saturated fat.
- Smallcroissant : 171 calories, 3 grams of protein, 19 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, 9 grams of fat, 5 grams of saturated fat.
- Largecroissant : 272 calories, 5 grams of protein, 31 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber, 14 grams of fat, 8 grams of saturated fat.
Then if you add toppings to the croissant, it will also increase the amount of fat and calories.
Is good for health?
Croffles that use croissant ingredients are actually not very good for health if included in the menu for a healthy diet plan, it is because this food menu does not provide much nutritional value.
Even some dietitians say that baked goods are a source of ’empty calories’.
Low-calorie foods provide energy mainly in the form of added sugars and unhealthy solid fats, such as saturated or trans fats. Many empty calorie foods also provide high levels of sodium.
But if you love croissants, it’s best to opt for a smaller size or portion instead. Alternatively, if you choose the large size, you can cut the portion in half and make sure not to consume too much in a day.
In addition, it is highly recommended not to use additional butter at all. The croissant dough is already baked with butter, so you can get the creamy flavor without adding spreads.
Healthy croffle recipe
For those of you who want to make croffles, here are the ingredients needed:
- 200 grams of wheat flour
- 20 grams of granulated sugar
- 6 grams of skim milk powder.
- 20 grams of frozen unsalted butter
- 4 grams of instant yeast
- 2 eggs
- 250 ml warm water
- 1 tsp salt
How to make:
- Mix warm water and yeast, then wait.
- Put the flour in different containers. Then, add sugar, salt, skim milk, and butter. Stir until smooth.
- Add the egg to the yeast mixture. Then put the yeast mixture mixed with eggs into the flour mixture and stir until smooth.
- Next, pour the batter on a table that has been covered with plastic. Knead the dough until smooth. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and cover with a dry cloth. Allow the dough to rise until doubled in size.
- While waiting, make the butter dough inside the croissant. Flatten the frozen unsalted butter with a rolling pin. Dust with flour to prevent sticking.
- Wrap the flattened butter in plastic wrap, store in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.
- Next, remove the bread dough from the bowl. Flatten the dough, but don’t make it too thin or thick. Place the butter on the flattened bread dough and fold the dough so that the butter is covered.
- After that, roll out the dough again. Be careful not to let the butter come out of the dough.
- Next, let the dough rest at room temperature for 30 minutes and fold the dough again, then do the same thing up to three times.
- Flatten the dough again and trim it to a rectangular shape. Slice the dough into right triangles. Roll each sliced dough from bottom to top to form a croissant. Do the same for the rest of the dough and let it rest for a while at room temperature.
- Prepare the waffle maker. Place the batter on the waffle maker. The butter from the croissant will melt to the shape of the mold.
- Remove the croffles from the waffle maker, when the croffle batter is browned.
You can add your favorite toppings such as brown sugar sprinkles, cheese, jam and honey. But as mentioned earlier, adding toppings to croissants will also increase fat and calories.
